Centralia: The ghost town
Localization: Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States
Centralia was once a mining town, with several mining tunnels deep under the town infrastructure as well as beyond. In May 1962, a trash pit was ignited by the town's firefighters, an annual procedure. The fire, on this year, spread out of control by escaping through a gap in the pit into the underground mining tunnels around the town. From 1962-1979, the town's efforts to quell the underground fires proved fruitless. In 1979, one particular attempt resulted in further infiltration of the fire into the mining tunnels beneath the town itself. From 1979, the heat was on, so to speak, and in 1983 congress approved a $42 million fund to relocate residents of the town who wished to leave. Residents witnessing smoke emitting from their and their neighbors' lawns began to evacuate.
This town was apparently the inspiration for the video game & film, Silent Hill.

Manchac Swamp
Localization: State of Louisiana, near the city of New Orleanes
Manchac Swamp, which looks like any ordinary swamp in Louisiana, is supposedly haunted. Legend says that there are far more creepier things than just alligators hiding in this swamp. Manchac Swamp is supposedly home to the blood sucking Rougarou, the Cajun version of a werewolf. Not only is there Rougarou to fear, but also the ghost of Julie White, a voodoo princess. Legend has it that White used to sit on her front porch and predict the destruction of close towns and sing, “One day I’m gonna die, and I’m gonna take all of you with me”. On the day of her funeral in 1915, a hurricane struck the area and wiped out three towns. The swamp is now a tourist sanctuary and a tourist haven thanks to the occasional body that floats up. Night tours are offered regularly to check out the mass graves and the red eyed crocodiles staring at the boat slowly go by.

Aokigahara: Suicide Forest
Localization: The base of Mt. Fuji, Japan
Also known as the Sea of Trees, Suicide Forest, and Japan’s Demon Forest, Aokigahara has been home to over 500 confirmed suicides since the 1950s. Called “the perfect place to die,” Aokigahara is the world’s second most popular place for suicide (the Golden Gate Bridge being the first).
Legend says that this all started after Seicho Matsumoto published a novel by the name of Kuroi Kaiju (Black Sea of Trees) in 1960. The story ends with two lovers committing suicide in the forest, so many people believe that’s what started it all. However, the history of suicide in Aokigahara predates the novel, and the place has long been associated with death. Hundreds upon hundreds of Japanese people have hanged themselves from the trees of Aokigahara forest.
